Health insurance for expats in Spain
At YES Valencia we don’t sell insurance, but we have seen that almost every client will need private health insurance at some point in the relocation process. Whether you are applying for a non-lucrative visa, registering as an EU resident, or simply want peace of mind with access to English-speaking doctors — sorting out health insurance in Spain as an expat is one of the first things to get right.
The application process and required documentation in Spain differ from most countries, and the language barrier adds an extra layer of complexity. That’s why we work with a trusted local insurance partner in Valencia who has consistently offered the best coverage and prices for our expatriate clients, along with very personal, English-language attention.
What does private health insurance in Spain cover?
A compliant policy for residency or visa purposes must include full coverage with no co-payments and no deductibles. This means: General Medicine, Accidents, Emergencies, Hospitalisation, Surgeries, Specialists, and Preventive Care — all included from day one. Note that prescriptions and glasses are generally not covered, but medication prices in Spain are a fraction of what they cost in the US or UK.
Do I need it for my visa or residency?
Yes — if you are applying for a Spanish non-lucrative resident visa (non-EU citizens) or registering as a resident by proving sufficient financial means (EU citizens), a full private health insurance policy is a mandatory requirement. A cheap policy with co-payments will not be accepted. Want to understand all the details before requesting a quote? Read our full guide:
